Five of a kind and other five-dice odds
What five dice do in a single roll, and how the odds change when you may re-roll twice.
One roll of five dice
Five six-sided dice have 7,776 equally likely combinations. Each roll falls into exactly one of these groups:
| Result | Ways | Chance | About |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five of a kind | 6 | 0.077% | 1 in 1,296 |
| Four of a kind | 150 | 1.93% | 1 in 52 |
| Full house (three and two) | 300 | 3.86% | 1 in 26 |
| Three of a kind | 1,200 | 15.4% | 1 in 6 |
| Two pairs | 1,800 | 23.1% | 1 in 4 |
| One pair | 3,600 | 46.3% | 1 in 2 |
| No two dice the same | 720 | 9.26% | 1 in 11 |
Straights
- Five in a row (1-2-3-4-5 or 2-3-4-5-6): 3.09%, or 1 in 32.
- At least four in a row: 15.4%, or 1 in 6.
Five of a kind with re-rolls
Many dice games let you keep some dice and roll the rest again, up to three rolls in all. If you always keep your largest group of matching dice, the chance of ending with five of a kind is:
| Rolls allowed | Chance of five of a kind | About |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0.077% | 1 in 1,296 |
| 2 | 1.263% | 1 in 79 |
| 3 | 4.603% | 1 in 22 |
So two re-rolls make five of a kind about 60 times more likely than a single throw, but it is still a long shot.
Several rolls in a row
- Five of a kind on two separate rolls running: 1 in 1,679,616.
- On three rolls running: 1 in 2,176,782,336.
- At least one five of a kind somewhere in three separate rolls: 0.231%, or 1 in 432.
In Closest Call, three separate rolls of five dice are made in every hand. At its regular tables, a five of a kind in any of them pays a bonus to every player dealt into the hand, which is why it is announced when it happens.
