How to Work Out Dice Odds Without a Calculator
Every dice probability comes from one sum: the number of ways to get the result you want, divided by the number of ways the dice can land. For one or two dice you can do it in your head. For three you need a scrap of paper. After that you need shortcuts, and there are three good ones.
Start by counting everything
One six-sided die can land 6 ways. Two dice can land 6 × 6 = 36 ways, because each face of the first die can pair with each face of the second. Three dice can land 216 ways, and each extra die multiplies the count by six.
The catch is that the dice are separate. A 3 and a 4 is one way, a 4 and a 3 is another. Forgetting this is the most common mistake in dice odds.
Two dice: the staircase
List the ways to make each total with two dice and a pattern appears.
| Total | Ways | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| 2 or 12 | 1 each | 2.8% |
| 3 or 11 | 2 each | 5.6% |
| 4 or 10 | 3 each | 8.3% |
| 5 or 9 | 4 each | 11.1% |
| 6 or 8 | 5 each | 13.9% |
| 7 | 6 | 16.7% |
The ways climb by one up to 7, then step back down. You never need to memorise the table. For a total of 7 or less, the number of ways is the total minus one. For a total above 7, it is thirteen minus the total. Divide by 36 and you have the chance.
To find the chance of a total or more, add the ways together. Rolling 10 or more is 3 + 2 + 1 = 6 ways out of 36, which is one in six.
Three dice: still countable
With three dice there are 216 outcomes, and the two most likely totals are 10 and 11. Each can be made 27 ways, so each comes up 12.5% of the time, and one or the other turns up on a quarter of all rolls.
To count the ways by hand, fix the first die and use the staircase for the other two. For a total of 10: if the first die shows 1, the other two must make 9, which is 4 ways. Showing 2 they must make 8, 5 ways. Then 6, 5, 4 and 3 ways as the first die goes up. That adds up to 27.
The ends of the range are thin. A total of 15 or more with three dice happens 20 ways in 216, about 9%.
Shortcut one: flip the question
Questions that start with "at least one" are easier backwards. Work out the chance that it does not happen, then take that away from one.
What is the chance of at least one six in four rolls? The chance of no six on one roll is 5 in 6. Four rolls in a row with no six is 5/6 multiplied by itself four times, which is about 48%. So at least one six turns up about 52% of the time. In two rolls the same sum gives about 31%.
Shortcut two: 3.5 per die
The faces of a die add up to 21, so the average roll is 3.5. Averages simply add. Two dice average 7, five average 17.5, ten average 35, and fifteen average 52.5. That tells you where the middle of the range is for any number of dice, with no counting at all.
Shortcut three: how wide is the middle
Knowing the middle is not enough. You also want to know how far a roll usually strays from it. Here the helpful fact is that the spread grows much more slowly than the number of dice. Four times as many dice only doubles it.
A rough rule: take the square root of the number of dice and multiply by 1.7. About two rolls in three land within that distance of the average.
- Two dice: about 2.4 either side of 7.
- Fifteen dice: about 6.6 either side of 52.5. Checked against the exact count, totals from 46 to 59 come up 70.7% of the time.
This is why a pile of dice feels predictable and a pair does not. Two dice can land anywhere in their range without surprising anyone. Fifteen dice can add up to anything from 15 to 90, yet seven rolls in ten fall inside a band fourteen points wide.
When to stop counting
Five dice can land 7,776 ways and fifteen dice about 470 billion. Nobody counts those by hand. Use the average and the spread for a quick estimate, and a calculator when you want the exact figure. Our free dice calculator gives the chance of any total for up to 40 dice, and the dice odds charts have the full tables for the most common rolls.
Those fifteen dice are the heart of Closest Call, a free game where you bet on a number you think the total will reach. The strategy guide has the exact odds for every number.
